I’m new to essential oils. How are they used?
There are three common ways oils are used: aromatically (inhaling or diffusing), topically (applying to the skin) and internally (ingesting them). Each bottle of Young Living essential oil is labelled with directions for how that oil can be used, and these directions vary based on location, so you should always consult with the product label for appropriate use directions. Here is a wonderful Essential Oils 101 article that gives you a basic overview of essential oils.
Do they really work?
Yes! 1000 times YES! I am not kidding when I say that our life and home has changed for the better because of essential oils. Our health has improved, our home is toxin-free and safe for our children and our emotional health has never been better! We could not be more grateful for these little bottles of goodness!
I see the term “carrier oil” used in several places. What is a carrier oil, what does it do, and why should I use it?
A carrier oil is a vegetable oil such as coconut oil or grapeseed oil that can be used to dilute EOs. YL V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex is an excellent carrier oil for all applications. Carrier oils ensure that EOs applied topically are comfortable, and prevents waste due to excessive application.
What is a hot oil?
“Hot oils” are oils that, when applied to the skin, can cause a 'hot' or tingling sensation. Examples of “hot” oils include cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, peppermint, oregano, thyme, Exodus II, and Thieves. YL recommends using a patch test procedure prior to first us.
To patch test an oil just apply 1-2 drops of EO to your forearm. Observe for 1-2 hours. Usually reactions occur within 5-10 minutes. If you experience a hot or burning sensation add V-6 carrier oil to the affected area as often as neede!
How often can essential oils be applied? How much do I use?
Essential oils are potent – so start low and go slow. In most cases 1-2 drops are adequate; using more may waste your oils! Build up over time and go with your gut. When in doubt - proper usage is indicated on each EO label.
Can essential oils be used during pregnancy or while nursing?
It is strongly recommended that, prior to use of essential oils, you seek the advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care advisor who is experienced in EO usage. We also recommend letting your midwife know that you are using essential oils while pregnant, so they are aware and can help you if need be. It is generally recommended to avoid overuse and excessive use of Clary Sage, Sage, Idaho Tansy, Hyssop, Fennel, and Wintergreen as well as the blends and supplements that contain these oils during pregnancy. Here is a wonderful article on the use of essential oils during pregnancy. Most essential oils can be used safely during pregnancy and nursing and are a wonderful and natural way to balance the mood and support the body during this special time.
Can I use essential oils on my children?
Yes! Essential oils are such a wonderful tool for kiddos. Many essential oils are appropriate for use on children but should be diluted with a carrier oil prior to use. YL even has oils that come prediluted with carrier oil and are intended for direct application on children. Hooray! We teach all the mamas on our team how to safely and confidently use oils with their little ones!
Is there a reason to go with Young Living over the eo brands out there?
Absolutely! Young Living is the only brand of essential oils that I trust to use on myself and my family because of their Seed to Seal promise. This promise is what helped us choose Young Living above all other brands - and it's why we are so crazy about sharing them! You can read all about the seed to seal process here.
